At first glance very different from the current Star Princess costume - but not really, if you look closer at it. The corseted, sleeveless bodice with vertical seams, the ruffled V shaped collar and “puffed sleeves”, the knee-length bell shaped skirt, the mask on stick - those are elements kept in the revamped design.

What IS different, though, is how much stiffer the skirt was, with a partly exposed crinoline fundament, and the apron drape in front, and also decorated with pompons throughout. And of course the colours, but that goes without saying…

The accessories are also different - a tricorn hat with feathers, a lace choker, white stockings and white high heeled buckle shoes.

The original dress is referred to as white, but was made of of a shimmering silverish white fabric decorated with white lace and black piping. The costume was, as far as I know, never used other places than the original West End production, and it was in use there until late 1987.

By accident the costume design came my way earlier this year. It was used on a Phantom quilt fabric licensed by RUG. The designs printed on it had gotten new colours, none of them matched Bjørnson’s original design, and this one was featured in yellow with red pompons and red hair. I believe the original would have featured a black and white dress and Christine with brown hair. The design also features elbow length sleeves with engageants, I don’t think this was ever tried out on stage.

Minus the cardboard stiffness of the skirt, I love this design so much better than the current star princess costume with all the pink and purple and glitter. This one is much more elegant, I think, and a little less “80s Prom Barbie.” :D

We all know we love men in fitting suits and pants, but once upon a time, it was more fashionable for men to wear shocking colors and have tons of decorations on their clothes than something that fit halfway decently.

Then, there was this man—Beau Brummell. Born in 1778, he decided that wearing a pink jacket with white lace and white silk breeches and more embroidery was lame (this was actually once worn by the Prince Regent, aka the figure King George IV) and that simpler clothing was a lot better, and flashy colors were better for actors in costume. Boots didn’t have tassels, cravats were starched and stiff, and England became famous for its tailors.

So when you imagine Mr. Darcy wearing a nice dark jacket or someone from a romance novel dressed in all those fine breeches, thank this wonderful man who took the courts of the Regency Period by storm and forever changed the fashion industry, effects that last to this day, not that there weren’t some imperfections to his style—his clothes were so well tailored that it’s said it took him hours to dress because the clothes were so tight.

Don’t imagine how hard it was for men to sit down then; by the time the Victorian age came around, clothes had certainly loosened up.

so last night when I couldn’t sleep, I decided to watch it. My friends are absolutely obsessed with it but for whatever reason, I’ve never seen it.

Dear God.

It is seriously one of the funniest things in the entire universe.

Draco Malfoy rolling around and PIGFARTS and Quirrell and Voldemort in the best bromace of all time and just holy crap why the HECK haven’t I seen this before? Why the HECK haven’t I watched this?!

AND DUMBLEDORE IS FROM YONKERS OR SOMETHING.

THAT IS BRILLIANT.

Once I finish the first one, I’m watching the sequel. I am laughing so hard that my throat actually hurts.

Next time I’m in the grocery store, I’m going to roll down the pasta aisle going, “PIGFARTS IS REAL.”

She also mastered the pointe technique and could have become a ballerina had she not grown to tall as a teenager. I would think the cartoonist here made some references to that.
